The World's Most Popular Internet sites are Powered by Sun

Popular Internet sites Powered by Sun

Whether you're using the Internet for communicating, collaborating or conducting commerce, it's highly likely that Sun technology helps to deliver your Internet experience. Sun servers, storage, operating systems and database technologies are at the heart of next generation businesses that are re-defining how the Internet serves users, communities and organisations.

Wikipedia Expansion

Wikipedia - the online encyclopaedia run by the Wikimedia Foundation - is one of the world's five most-visited Web sites... and it's built on Sun's MySQL database. With over 11 million articles - in 265 languages and hosted on over 300 servers - Wikipedia receives 25,000 to 60,000 page requests every second. When Wikimedia needed to expand its storage capacity and ensure system reliability and high availability, it chose Sun. Sun's Startup Essentials program enabled Wikimedia to supplement its existing Linux-based systems with a Sun Open Storage solution that includes Sun Fire X4150 and Sun Fire X4250 servers - running the Solaris 10 operating system, with the Solaris ZFS File System.

eBay - Search and Database Farms

Every day, eBay brings together millions of buyers and sellers. eBay has deployed more than 1,400 Sun Fire X4100 M2 servers for its search farm, plus Sun Fire T2000 servers for its database farm. To handle over 100 million items listed for auction each day, eBay has deployed the Sun StorageTek 9990 storage system and Sun L700 tape libraries. eBay's developer team programs exclusively in Java, while Sun Managed Services provide 24x7 support for the database and search tiers in eBay's datacenter.

Internet Brands Standardises on Solaris 10

Internet Brands Inc operates more than 45 community and e-commerce Web sites. When one of its sites - CarsDirect.com - needed enterprise-class support and decided to migrate from Linux to Sun's Solaris 10 operating system on the x86 platform, the project was so successful that the rest of Internet Brands' sites quickly followed. Standardising on one operating system has brought efficiency gains and the Solaris-based solution can handle 20 times more concurrent users... on the same hardware. Virtualisation - using Solaris Containers - enabled Internet Brands to eliminate 20 servers, while Predictive Self Healing has enabled automated monitoring.

NBC - Olympics Success

NBC, a major US broadcast network, established a high-capacity Web site - using Sun technologies - to provide real-time event feeds, news coverage and other dynamic content during the 2008 Olympics. The site delivered 17 days of live coverage, 2,000 hours of streaming video and 34 Olympic sport homepages - and NBCOlympics.com is already set up for the 2010 Winter Games. NBC chose a combination of 160 x Sun Fire X4150 and Sun Fire X4450 servers - in order to handle millions of daily visitors and large spikes in traffic. The Sun servers use Intel quad-core Xeon processors and deliver higher performance, while being energy-efficient and space-efficient.
